Capitol and Capital City History
Completed in 1932, West Virginia’s Classical Revival Capitol was designed by Cass Gilbert and crowned by a gilded dome higher than the U.S. Capitol’s.
After years of rivalry and moves between Wheeling and Charleston, voters selected Charleston permanently in 1877 for its central location and river connections.
