Capitol and Capital City History
Completed in 1928, Washington’s Legislative Building is the centerpiece of a Beaux-Arts campus; its masonry dome is among the tallest in the world.
Olympia became territorial capital in 1853 because its Puget Sound location served early settlements and commerce, and voters later retained it over rival cities.
