Capitol and Capital City History
Completed in 1888, the Texas Capitol is a Renaissance Revival landmark built of sunset-red granite and crowned by the Goddess of Liberty.
Austin, originally Waterloo, was chosen in 1839 for a planned capital near the republic’s center and frontier, championed by President Mirabeau Lamar.
