Capitol and Capital City History

Completed in 1859, Tennessee’s Greek Revival Capitol was designed by William Strickland, who is buried within it. Its hilltop setting and tower-like cupola make it unusually fortresslike.

Nashville became permanent capital in 1843 after years of rotation; its central position, Cumberland River access, and commercial growth favored it.
