Capitol and Capital City History

Completed in 1910, South Dakota’s Capitol is a Neoclassical building of native stone, marble, and terrazzo beneath a copper dome.

Pierre won statewide votes in 1889 and 1890 because its central location on the Missouri River balanced eastern and western interests.
