Capitol and Capital City History

Constructed over decades and completed in 1907, the South Carolina State House is a Classical Revival granite building marked by bronze stars showing where Union artillery struck it in 1865.

Columbia was founded as a planned capital in 1786, replacing Charleston with a more central inland location intended to balance Lowcountry and Upcountry interests.
