Capitol and Capital City History

Completed in 1904, the Rhode Island State House is a grand Neoclassical building crowned by one of the world’s largest self-supporting marble domes and the Independent Man statue.

Rhode Island once rotated legislative sessions among several towns. Providence became the sole capital in 1900 as the state’s largest city and principal commercial and transportation center.
