Capitol and Capital City History

Dedicated in 1906, Pennsylvania’s Beaux-Arts Capitol was designed by Joseph Huston as a palace of art, with a green-tiled dome, murals, sculpture, and elaborate decorative interiors.

Harrisburg became capital in 1812, replacing Lancaster. Its central location on the Susquehanna River and transportation connections better served a state whose population was expanding westward.
