Capitol and Capital City History
Completed in 1938 after two earlier capitols burned, Oregon’s Capitol is a streamlined Modern and Art Deco building faced in marble. Its drum-like dome supports the gilded Oregon Pioneer.
Salem became territorial capital after rivalry with Oregon City and Corvallis; its Willamette Valley location, river access, and growing population helped make the choice permanent.
