Capitol and Capital City History
Opened in 1917, the Oklahoma Capitol combines Classical and Renaissance Revival design. Its long-planned dome was finally added in 2002 and is topped by a Native American figure called The Guardian.
Oklahoma City replaced Guthrie in 1910 after a statewide vote, reflecting its rapid growth, central location, and expanding railroad and commercial importance.
