Capitol and Capital City History
Built from 1839 to 1861, the Ohio Statehouse is a Greek Revival landmark distinguished by a low conical roof rather than a conventional dome. Its limestone walls enclose a broad rotunda.
Columbus was founded as a planned capital in 1812, chosen for a central location and donated land after rivalry among Ohio’s earlier seats of government.
