Capitol and Capital City History

Completed in 1934, North Dakota’s Capitol is a 21-story Art Deco tower built after the previous capitol burned. Its streamlined form earned the nickname Skyscraper on the Prairie.

Bismarck became territorial capital in 1883, replacing Yankton, because its railroad connections and more central northern location favored the growing Dakota Territory; it remained capital at statehood.
