Capitol and Capital City History

Completed in 1840, the North Carolina State Capitol is an exceptionally intact Greek Revival building of local granite. It originally housed all three branches of state government.

Raleigh was selected in 1792 as a centrally located, purpose-built capital after government had met in several towns; land was purchased near Isaac Hunter’s tavern, a familiar meeting place for legislators.
