Capitol and Capital City History

Built from 1867 to 1899, New York’s monumental Capitol mixes Romanesque, Renaissance, and Classical influences and is unusual for having no dome. Its long construction involved several architects and immense stone staircases.

Albany became the permanent capital in 1797 because its Hudson River location connected downstate commerce with expanding inland settlements while avoiding New York City’s overwhelming influence.
