Capitol and Capital City History

Completed in 1966, New Mexico’s round Capitol—known as the Roundhouse—uses a modern design inspired by the Zia sun symbol and blends Pueblo, Territorial, and contemporary forms.

Santa Fe has served as a governmental center since 1610 under Spanish, Mexican, territorial, and state rule, making it the nation’s oldest state capital.
