Capitol and Capital City History
The oldest portion of the New Jersey State House dates to 1792, making it one of the nation’s oldest capitols still in use. Repeated expansions created its present blend of historic wings and a distinctive gold-leaf dome.
Trenton became the state capital in 1790. Its location on the Delaware River between the major population centers of New York and Philadelphia offered accessibility, economic importance, and a politically useful geographic compromise.
