Capitol and Capital City History
Completed in 1871, the Nevada State Capitol is a restrained Neoclassical building constructed of locally quarried sandstone. Its silver-colored cupola reflects the state’s mining identity, while later government buildings formed a surrounding complex.
Carson City became territorial capital in 1861. Its proximity to the Comstock mining region, existing settlement, transportation routes, and support from founder Abraham Curry made it the practical choice when Nevada achieved statehood.
