Capitol and Capital City History

Completed in 1932, Nebraska’s Capitol is an Art Deco skyscraper designed by Bertram Goodhue. Its 400-foot tower, crowned by The Sower, replaced the conventional dome with a striking vertical landmark filled with symbolic mosaics and sculpture.

The capital moved from Omaha to Lancaster in 1867 to place government south of the Platte River and nearer the new state’s geographic center. Lancaster was renamed Lincoln as part of the move.
