Capitol and Capital City History

Completed in 1902 and expanded in 1912, the Montana State Capitol is a Neoclassical building of sandstone and granite. Its copper dome is topped by Liberty, while the interior includes murals celebrating Montana’s history.

Helena became territorial capital in 1875 after the seat moved from Virginia City. In an 1894 statewide election, Helena defeated Anaconda; its established government offices, central-western location, and wealth from mining helped it prevail.
