The 1966 Galaxie at the Missouri State Capitol in Jefferson City.
Capitol and Capital City History
Missouri’s present Capitol was completed in 1917 after its predecessor burned in 1911. The Classical Revival building is faced with native limestone and crowned by a dome bearing a bronze figure of Ceres.
Jefferson City was selected in 1821 as a centrally located, purpose-built capital along the Missouri River. Named for Thomas Jefferson, it balanced regional interests rather than concentrating government in the larger city of St. Louis.
