Capitol and Capital City History
Completed in 1903, Mississippi’s Beaux-Arts Capitol features a limestone exterior, classical columns, stained glass, and a dome topped by a gilded eagle. It replaced the 1839 Old Capitol as state government expanded.
Jackson was chosen in 1821 for a planned capital near Mississippi’s geographic center and named for Andrew Jackson. Its location on the Pearl River was intended to improve access as settlement spread beyond the older Natchez region.
