Capitol and Capital City History

Minnesota’s present Capitol, completed in 1905, was designed by Cass Gilbert in the Beaux-Arts tradition. Its self-supporting marble dome is among the world’s largest, and the interior combines grand ceremonial spaces with extensive artwork.

St. Paul became territorial capital in 1849 because it was an established Mississippi River settlement and transportation center. Efforts to move the capital later failed, and its growth beside Minneapolis secured its role.
