Capitol and Capital City History

Completed in 1879, the Michigan State Capitol is a Renaissance Revival building designed by Elijah E. Myers. Its cast-iron dome, decorative painting, and glass floor tiles made it an influential model for later American capitols.

Detroit was Michigan’s territorial capital, but Lansing was selected in 1847 after disagreement over other candidates. The inland location was more central, reduced dependence on Detroit, and encouraged development in the state’s interior.
