Capitol and Capital City History

Designed by Charles Bulfinch and completed in 1798, the Massachusetts State House is a landmark of Federal architecture. Its gilded dome, originally covered in wood shingles and later copper, overlooks Boston Common and Beacon Hill.

Boston had long been the colony’s political and commercial center, so it naturally continued as capital after independence. The Beacon Hill site provided a prominent setting above the growing port city.
