Capitol and Capital City History

Completed in 1779, the Maryland State House is the oldest state capitol in continuous legislative use. Its wooden dome is the largest of its type in the United States, and the building briefly housed the national Congress in the 1780s.

Annapolis, then called Anne Arundel Town, became Maryland’s capital in 1695 when government moved from St. Mary’s City. Its central Chesapeake location and active port better served the growing colony.
