Capitol and Capital City History

The Maine State House opened in 1832 from a design by Charles Bulfinch and was substantially enlarged in 1910. Built of local granite, its restrained Classical exterior is crowned by a copper dome and the figure of Wisdom.

Portland served as the first capital after Maine separated from Massachusetts in 1820. Augusta was chosen in 1827 for its more central location and river access, with government moving into the new State House five years later.
