Capitol and Capital City History

Completed in 1932, Louisiana’s Art Deco Capitol rises 450 feet and remains the tallest state capitol in the nation. Governor Huey Long championed the skyscraper design as a modern break from traditional domed capitols.

Baton Rouge became the capital in 1849 as lawmakers sought a location away from New Orleans’s concentrated political and commercial influence. The government briefly returned to New Orleans before Baton Rouge became permanent after Reconstruction.
