Capitol and Capital City History

Completed in 1910, Kentucky’s present Capitol is a Beaux-Arts landmark designed by Frank Mills Andrews. Its grand marble interiors, columned exterior, and landscaped setting reflected the state’s desire for a modern government building after outgrowing the Old State Capitol.

Frankfort became Kentucky’s capital in 1792 after competing communities offered land, money, and building materials. Its relatively central location and position on the Kentucky River helped the small town retain the seat of government.
