Capitol and Capital City History

The Kansas State Capitol was built in stages from 1866 to 1903 and combines Classical and Renaissance influences. Its copper dome, later crowned by the Ad Astra figure, rises above a richly restored interior filled with murals and historic decoration.

Topeka was selected as capital when Kansas entered the Union in 1861. Its central eastern location, organized Free-State leadership, donated building site, and access to river and overland transportation helped it prevail over rival communities.
