Capitol and Capital City History
Completed in 1886, the Iowa State Capitol is best known for its central gold-leaf dome surrounded by four smaller domes. The Renaissance Revival building contains extensive decorative art, woodwork, and a grand law library.
Iowa City first served as capital, but lawmakers chose Des Moines in 1857 as population shifted westward. Its central location at the junction of the Des Moines and Raccoon rivers made it more accessible to the growing state.
