Capitol and Capital City History

Completed in 1888, the Indiana Statehouse is a Renaissance Revival building constructed of Indiana limestone. Its balanced cross-shaped plan, central rotunda, and dome were designed to gather the legislative, executive, and judicial branches under one roof.

Indianapolis was selected in 1820 to replace Corydon. State leaders wanted a purpose-built capital near Indiana’s geographic center as settlement expanded northward, and the new city’s later road and railroad connections reinforced the choice.
