Capitol and Capital City History
Illinois’s sixth capitol was built from 1868 to 1888 in the French Renaissance and Italianate traditions. Its tall dome rises higher than the dome of the U.S. Capitol and dominates Springfield’s skyline.
The capital moved from Kaskaskia to Vandalia and finally to Springfield in 1839. Central location, population moving northward, transportation prospects, and the advocacy of Abraham Lincoln and other Sangamon County legislators all influenced the decision.
