Capitol and Capital City History
Completed in 1920 after construction in two stages, the Idaho State Capitol is a Neoclassical building of sandstone and marble crowned by a copper-covered dome. Its bright central rotunda was designed as the symbolic heart of state government.
Boise replaced Lewiston as territorial capital in 1864 amid population growth and political rivalry between northern and southern Idaho. Its location near mining districts and major overland routes helped secure the government’s lasting presence.
