Capitol and Capital City History

Opened in 1969, the Hawaii State Capitol is a modernist building whose open-air design reflects the islands: the surrounding pool represents the Pacific, cone-shaped chambers suggest volcanoes, and columns evoke royal palms.

Honolulu became the permanent capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom in 1845 under Kamehameha III, replacing Lahaina. Its sheltered harbor and growing importance in trade and government kept it the capital through annexation and statehood.
