Capitol and Capital City History

Completed in 1889, the Georgia State Capitol is a Renaissance and Classical Revival building faced largely in Indiana limestone. Its dome was gilded with native Georgia gold in 1958, creating one of Atlanta’s best-known landmarks.

Georgia’s capital followed settlement westward from Savannah to Augusta, Louisville, and Milledgeville. Atlanta was selected in 1868 because its railroad network, rapid postwar growth, and increasing economic importance made it the state’s emerging center.
