Capitol and Capital City History
Florida’s present Capitol, completed in 1977, is a modern high-rise complex built directly behind the restored 1845 Historic Capitol. The contrast preserves the older domed landmark while providing far more space for contemporary government.
Tallahassee was chosen in 1824 as a compromise between St. Augustine and Pensacola, the major population centers of Florida’s two former Spanish provinces. Its location roughly midway between them made travel more practical for territorial lawmakers.
