Capitol and Capital City History

Delaware’s Legislative Hall opened in 1933 and was designed in the Colonial Revival style, complementing the Georgian character of nearby historic buildings. Later wings expanded the complex while preserving its red-brick, white-trimmed appearance.

Dover became the state capital in 1777, replacing New Castle. Its more central inland location made government accessible to all three counties and offered greater protection from British naval activity during the Revolutionary War.
