Capitol and Capital City History
The United States Capitol has housed Congress since 1800. Begun in 1793, it was rebuilt after the British burning of 1814 and greatly enlarged in the 1850s, when the present cast-iron dome was added.
The new federal government first met in New York City in 1789. The Residence Act of 1790 created a compromise: Philadelphia served as temporary capital for ten years while a permanent federal district was built on the Potomac, selected by George Washington and positioned between northern and southern interests.
