Capitol and Capital City History
Completed in 1851, the Alabama State Capitol is a Greek Revival landmark whose white portico and central dome became symbols of state government. The building has witnessed major events, including the inauguration of Jefferson Davis and the concluding march of the Selma-to-Montgomery voting-rights campaign.
Alabama moved its capital from Tuscaloosa to Montgomery in 1846. Settlement had expanded eastward after Creek lands opened, placing Montgomery nearer the state’s population and geographic center while its river and rail connections strengthened its case.
