Capitol and Capital City History

Completed in 1878, the Connecticut State Capitol is an ornate High Victorian Gothic building designed by Richard M. Upjohn. Its marble, granite, towers, statuary, and gilded dome make it one of the country’s most distinctive capitols.

For much of its colonial history, Connecticut alternated legislative sessions between Hartford and New Haven. Voters selected Hartford as the sole capital in 1873, reflecting its central location and growing importance in commerce, industry, and transportation.
