Capitol and Capital City History
Colorado’s Capitol was constructed from 1886 to 1894 in a Neoclassical style using native granite. Its dome was later covered in gold leaf to honor the state’s mining history, and the building’s elevation is famously marked near one mile above sea level.
Denver served as the territorial capital and defeated competing cities in an 1881 statewide vote. Its size, transportation connections, commercial influence, and position as the territory’s dominant population center made the choice enduring.
