Capitol and Capital City History
California’s Capitol was built from 1861 to 1874 in a Neoclassical style, with a columned portico and a dome that deliberately evokes the national Capitol. A major restoration completed in 1982 strengthened and renewed the historic west wing.
California’s young government moved repeatedly among San Jose, Vallejo, Benicia, and Sacramento. Sacramento secured the permanent role in 1854 through political support, donated land, transportation access, and its importance during the Gold Rush.
