Capitol and Capital City History

The Arkansas State Capitol was constructed between 1899 and 1915 in the Neoclassical style, with a limestone exterior and a prominent dome modeled in the broad tradition of the U.S. Capitol. It replaced the smaller Old State House as government expanded.

Little Rock became the territorial capital in 1821. Its position near the geographic center of Arkansas and its location on the Arkansas River made it more accessible and commercially promising than the earlier territorial seat at Arkansas Post.
