Capitol and Capital City History
Completed in 1901 as the territorial capitol, Arizona’s original capitol is a Neoclassical building crowned by a copper-covered dome and a statue of Winged Victory. Later additions housed the legislature, while the historic building eventually became a museum.
The territorial capital moved between Prescott, Tucson, and Prescott again before lawmakers selected Phoenix in 1889. Phoenix’s central location, growing population, and expanding transportation links helped it become the permanent seat of government.
