Capitol and Capital City History

Alaska’s Capitol began as a federal territorial building and was completed in 1931. Its restrained Art Deco design, faced with brick and Indiana limestone, looks more like a substantial office building than the domed capitols familiar in many other states.

Sitka had been the territorial capital, but Juneau’s rise as a mining, shipping, and commercial center led Congress to transfer the seat of government there in 1906. Juneau remained the capital when Alaska achieved statehood in 1959.
