Capitol and Capital City History

Completed in 1859, Vermont’s Greek Revival State House is distinguished by a gold-leaf dome and carefully preserved legislative chambers.

Montpelier became capital in 1805 because its central location offered a compromise among competing towns; local citizens also provided land and construction support.
